Under the Hood

How SameBoat works

Plain answers on how matching happens, what a group looks like inside, and how you stay in control.

1. Sign in and tell us where you are

Sign in at app.sameboat.app/login with Google, GitHub, LinkedIn, or a 6-digit email code. Then add a few profile details: the role and field you came from, your metro area, when the layoff happened, and where you are in the search. If you want, share your story too, under your name or a generated anonymous handle. Shared stories are safety-checked and appear only on the members-only Stories page.

2. Opt in and get matched

When you opt in to matching, SameBoat groups you with 4 to 6 people whose situations genuinely line up, weighing things like your field, your area, your stage in the search, and how recently you were laid off. It’s not a random chat room.

When your boat is ready, we send one email from hello@sameboat.app to let you know. You can turn group notifications off with one click at any time.

3. What a group looks like

Each boat is a calm, private text chat for 4 to 6 people. Everyone appears by the name from their sign-in or a display name they choose. There are no public profiles, follower counts, or algorithmic feeds.

4. How safety works

Every post gets an automated AI safety check. Anything flagged is held for human review by Varry LLC before the rest of the boat sees it, and the author is told the post is pending. You can report a shared story from the Stories page, or email hello@sameboat.app about anything in your boat. Read the community guidelines.

5. Optional: sail a Voyage

Some people want more than conversation. A Voyage is a boat that also shares a goal: “Land your next role.” It runs six weeks with a short weekly check-in, a goal board, “Ask the boat” requests for concrete help like a resume read or a mock interview, and an opt-in wins wall. At week six, everyone chooses to renew, switch boats, or disembark.

The chat still comes first, and goals are optional for every member. Check-in reminders are group notifications, so you can turn them off in your email preferences. Voyages are open now: pick Harbor (chat only) or Voyage when you opt in to matching.

6. Leaving for good

You can delete your account at any time from your Profile in the app. Your account and data are deleted.

Take five minutes to tell us where you are.

We’ll email you as soon as 4 to 6 peers in the same spot are ready.
